Davin Corona is a community organizer with Strategic Actions for a Just Economy (SAJE). He first began working with SAJE as a Public Ally in 2002. Because of his ability to work with community members and SAJE partners and staff he was soon brought on as a full time community organizer. Davin was born in Los Angeles and raised in Baldwin Park and Lincoln Heights. He attended California State Polytechnic University in Pomona and UCLA’s Community Scholars Program. He studied political science, history, English, ethnic and women studies, urban planning, and community organizing. As a member of the Organizing Team of SAJE, he helps facilitate the process of community organizing concerning housing and city redevelopment issues. Before joining SAJE, Davin worked as an organizer for the California Faculty Association and was a residential advisor at Cal Poly Pomona and a maintenance worker for BriteWorks Inc. He lives in Lincoln Heights with his partner Fabiola and their new daughter Amaya.
Max Mariscal grew up in Oaxaca, Mexico where he was not politically active. He became politically active after migrating to the U.S. In 2001, he joined the Koreatown Immigrant Workers Alliance (KIWA) and as a worker member, he helped organized workers at Assi Super market who started a campaign to establish a union in their workplace and improve their working conditions. Max became an organizer with KIWA in 2003. He has shown himself to be not only an expert organizer but also a terrific spokesperson for KIWA and a successful fundraiser.
Pete White is the director of the Los Angeles Community Action Network. He has educated and organized thousands of homeless and low-income people on a multitude of community issues and campaigns. He was the lead organizer of the Los Angeles Coalition to End Hunger & Homelessness for 10 years and founded LA CAN in 1999. Pete built the capacity of LA CAN to become an independent non-profit organization in 2002. Since that time, the organizational budget has more than doubled and LA CAN’s focus has expanded from civil rights to also include housing preservation, homeless prevention, redevelopment policy, women’s rights, healthy food access, and violence prevention. Pete has served on a variety of Boards and Advisory Committees related to homelessness, organizing, and grassroots funding. The addition of these three folks to our Board strengthens the connections that we have with the activist community in Los Angeles. Davin, Max, and Pete participated in our 2006 Board Retreat and helped select the 2006 Grantees. Their on the ground experience fighting alongside working and marginalized people will help us to continue the struggle to challenge the inequalities of our society.
WELCOME DAVIN, MAX AND PETE!
