2008 Grantees Work Hard for a Country in Crisis

The DMF Board met in September 2008 to consider almost 70 individual requests for funding.  We were really impressed with the terrific work being done by so many grassroots progressive organizations.

We always start our Board Retreats with a political discussion.  Obviously, in  September 2008 there was a lot to talk about with the global economic crisis being uncovered and the pending presidential elections.

We concluded that our country was truly in crisis and more than ever there was a need for intensification of the struggle for economic, political and social justice.  We awarded total grants of $65,500 to 22 different projects.  19 of these projects were within the state of California while the others were in Hawaii (Truth 2 Youth), Colorado (Rights for All People/RAP/Derechos Para Todos) and everywhere  (Student/ Farm worker Alliance).  15 were to organizations we have funded in the past while 7 were organizations new to our foundation.

Rather than trying to describe these projects in our few words, we have done something different.

First, there is a new section on our Home Page (LINKS) which lists all of the grantees, the amount awarded and their websites (if they have one)."

Next, we have asked the grantees themselves to write about the projects we funded.  We will continue this practice and hope to update our web site on a monthly basis with these inspiring articles.

Read the articles, go to the LINKS section and  -  most of all - keep hope alive and continue the fight to make the American dream a reality for all of its workers.

Thank you.

Labor and Social Justice Fair 2009

“I felt something magical here that I haven’t felt in a long time.”  This comment made by one of the participants of the Labor and Social Justice Fair still lingers in my mind. Our goal was to create an innovative space to inspire people’s imagination about organizing for change. read more

Fights for Civil Rights !!

A battle is on in downtown L.A. pitting homeless and low income residents against big property owners pushing gentrification. The LAPD is clearing the area of poor and mostly Black folks to serve the "new downtown". Civil rights are being trampled.

LACAN has organized resistance. They have produced a dynamite "Community Manual" that sets forth the politics of this explosive attempt at displacement and how folks are fighting for justice. We have attached the entire manual so you can learn how LACAN's experiences and tactics can help your members ! Read more...

An American Introspective

Have we turned into SHEEP?

"Unlike us Americans, who don’t run into the streets unless our houses are on fire or a professional sports team has won a championship, when the French face economic catastrophe, they have, historically, taken to the barricades like fiends; they block traffic, burn cars, and generally raise hell.  Win or lose, they show the authorities how seriously they value their standard of living.
