2010 GUIDELINES FOR GRANT APPLICATIONS
So many folks have been calling to share their ideas for projects for the 2010 Funding Cycle that we wanted to highlight a few special concerns for you.
While we welcome all email and phone inquiries, we would suggest that you do the following:
1. If you are not familiar with the DMF, start by reading About DMF and back issues of our newsletter.
2. Go to FUNDING PRIORITIES. The article “Are We a Match?” is really the roadmap that will let you know whether or not you will be wasting your time submitting a Letter of Inquiry. If you think we are a match, go on to read the rest of the Funding Priorities Section.
3. DON’T FORGET:
The Letter of Inquiry is a SCREENING DOCUMENT. It is not the totality of what we will consider. We just want to see if it is the collective decision of our Board that your project should advance beyond a first glance. If we agree, your project will be assigned to one of our Board members (you can check out their bios in the About DMF section) who will contact you before the full board discusses your project at our annual retreat.
We receive almost 100 L.O.I.s. We want to read all of them. We CANNOT if you send in lengthy LOIs which is why we WILL RETURN ANY LOI that answers our questions in more than 3 sentences.
If you are a cultural worker (particularly if your project involves a film/video/documentary), we VERY SPECIFICALLY WANT TO KNOW HOW YOUR “ FINISHED PRODUCT” WILL BE USED TO ORGANIZE FOLKS TO ACTION . Give us all the details (who, how, why, etc).
We love reading about all the great work that is being done and truly look forward to supporting your projects.
DMF AWARDS $70,000
The DMF Board met in September 2009 to consider over 80 terrific requests for funding.
As always, the prelude to our review of pending applications was a lively political discussion that focused on the global economic crisis as the de-industrialization of America continued to pit the “nouveau poor” against the “already poor” as our working class moved from low wage employment and inadequate housing to erratic employment and no housing.
The government response has been to turn poverty into a crime as the Obama administration dug in to protect the capitalist system at all cost.
Various Board members commented on where the fight back was occurring and had the best chance of succeeding. We asked who controls the streets? Where is the synergy of resistance and consciousness?
We want you our readers to know that this is the background for our review of your projects. We attempted to look at the ever sharpening focus on issues of land use and housing but continue our support of workplace organizing, educational reform, the fight for peace and the search for new sustainable economies and protection of the environment.
We awarded $70,000 to 32 different projects. This Funding cycle we started grouping our grantees according to area of work. Go to our LINKS section for a complete listing of all grantees, the amount of the grant and contact info.
Great work is being done. We are really excited to learn about your plans for the rest of 2010 and 2011 !!
